Fossil Fuelscapes: Exploring the complex structures of the fossil fuel refineries that are the foundation of our current global economy
From above, fossil fuel refineries and related facilities can be seen in their full complexity - appearing as organism-like networks, circuit boards, or small cities unto themselves. They stretch in vast complexities of lines, pipes, tubes, fans, smokestacks, vents, holding containers and ducts. I became fascinated by the intricate shapes & structures of these facilities, and shot this series of photos from small planes in the late afternoons to capture the sites with golden light.
This ongoing series documents fossil fuel refineries, power plants and materials holding facilities in five countries - exploring visually the energy technology that currently underpins the lifestyles & economies of much of our planet’s populations.
